Introduction

The Expedition is a classic full-size SUV. Built on a beefy body-on-frame platform, the Expedition excels at towing, hauling cargo, and carrying up to nine passengers. Fuel economy isn’t the Expedition’s best asset, so those shopping for a full-size sport-ute should expect to pay for the full-size utility and space at the pump. Although the Expedition is pitted against some strong competition from Dodge, GM, Nissan, and Toyota, a major freshening in 2007 went a long way toward keeping the Expedition a viable choice. Even further to that end, the Expedition EL was launched in 2007. It features a longer wheelbase and an expansive cargo area.

One area where both the Expedition and the EL are lacking is in the powertrain department. The Expedition comes standard with a 300-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 and a six-speed automatic transmission, but even with six speeds, the V-8 can’t move the Expedition with the same gusto that most of the Expedition’s competition enjoys, as many of the Expedition’s peers offer in excess of 350 horsepower. In today’s world, the Expedition can feel a bit underpowered—or leisurely, if you’re in a forgiving mood.

Last year’s redesign changed the exterior styling, and perhaps more important, the interior was upgraded. Inside, the Expedition is comfortable and spacious and benefits from clean design and excellent materials. For 2008, those seeking even more luxury might be interested in the King Ranch Expedition that comes with special leather seats and other handsome trim pieces. Unlike some of its competition, the Expedition has an independent rear suspension that allows for a more spacious and comfortable third row.

Those who need a full-size sport-utility but aren’t in a big hurry will find that the refined and handsome Expedition will suit their needs perfectly. Those seeking more horsepower will likely look elsewhere.

Major competitors to the Ford Expedition are the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Dodge Durango, the GMC Yukon, the Nissan Armada, and the Toyota Sequoia.

Verdict

The Ford Expedition is a refined and solid entry in the full-size-SUV segment. The interior is spacious, well designed, and comfortable for nine occupants. What’s New for 2008

Completely redesigned for 2007, the Expedition enters 2008 with only minor changes. The King Ranch trim level is new to the Expedition and features Chaparral leather seats and a standard power-folding third-row seat. XLT models get body-colored front and rear fascias (previously black) and a new chrome-clad wheel option. A keyless entry keypad, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outside mirrors, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, auxiliary air conditioning, a full overhead console, illuminated vanity mirrors, and second-row map lights are now standard on all Expedition models. Eddie Bauer models get a chrome exhaust tip for 2008. The Limited and new King Ranch trim levels get standard power-adjustable pedals, power rear-quarter windows, a programmable garage-door opener, and a reverse-sensing system. Two options—power running boards and a rearview camera system—are newly available for ’08.

Trim Levels

At the bottom of the Expedition lineup is the XLT version. Available in both “normal” length and the longer EL, the Expedition XLT starts at $32,270, with the EL coming in at $35,795; four-wheel drive is a $2900 option on all Expedition models. The XLT trim level comes standard with the following equipment: a 300-hp, 5.4-liter V-8 engine, a six-speed automatic transmission, stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, tire-pressure monitoring, front-seat side-impact airbags, three-row curtain airbags, 17-inch aluminum wheels, power exterior mirrors, running boards, automatic headlights, fog lights, keyless-entry keypad, air conditioning, an AM/FM/CD stereo with an auxiliary input jack, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 40/20/40 split-folding second row, carpeted floor mats, and power locks and windows. The EL version adds 24 extra cubic feet of cargo volume, a 33.5-gallon fuel tank (up from 28.0 gallons on the regular Expedition), a cargo organizer, and a flat-folding 60/40-split third-row bench seat.

Moving up to the Eddie Bauer trim level requires $37,515 for a rear-drive Expedition. The Eddie Bauer Expedition EL with rear-wheel drive starts at $40,165; $2900 is required to fit four-wheel drive to either. Eddie Bauer models come well equipped with the features on the XLT and add the following: Pueblo Gold body cladding, power heated external mirrors, an upgraded AM/FM stereo with an in-dash six-CD changer, leather-trimmed seats, dual-zone climate control, a message center, steering-wheel-mounted audio and climate controls, a power driver’s seat with memory, a power-folding third-row seat, 17-inch machined aluminum wheels, and overhead and floor consoles.

The luxurious Limited trim level starts at $39,675 and rises to $42,325 for the EL version. Four-wheel drive is a $2900 option on either. The Limited starts with the equipment from the Eddie Bauer trim level and adds power-adjustable pedals, power-folding external mirrors, heated and cooled front seats, a 10-way power passenger seat, 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels, and a chrome-tipped exhaust.

The handsome King Ranch trim level dresses up the Expedition in cowboy apparel and starts at $41,615 for rear drive. The longer EL King Ranch rings in at $44,265 for the rear-drive version. Four-wheel drive remains a $2900 option. I bought a Ford Expedition EL in two thousand ten, and have loved every minute of it since. I upgraded my Ford Explorer needing something bigger with children coming in the near future. Since I have bought my Expedition, I have moved to the other side of the country towing my Explorer behind on a trailer. I had no problems towing, I really didn't even was towing it behind unless I looked at the rear view mirror. It came with a DVD package, which is great for the kids in the back seat. The only bad thing about the DVD player is who gets to watch what at that time. It came with the third row seat, for those extended family vacations other than that it stays folded down. All in all I am still excited about owning my Expedition.

My only complaint about this vehicle is that is can be expensive to maintain. I paid well over $600 for spark plugs and wires to be replaced at the dealership, and I know when the time comes putting new tires on it will put a dent in my bank account.
