Razer Synapse Vulnerability: with a Simple Mouse Plugging in, Windows System Privileges Are Achieved

A Razer Synapse vulnerability was identified, Razer being a vendor of services in the financial area, consumer electronics, gaming devices, and a manufacturer of peripherals for computers. The technology company is most popular for the gaming keyboards and mouses they produce.

The zero-day has been discovered by researcher jonhat who announced it on Twitter and shared a video sample of how it works. This new bug permits Windows admin privileges achievement. How? With a Razer mouse or keyboard, simply plugging it into a computer. When such a device is connected to Windows 10 or 11, what happens next is that the Razer Synapse software starts to download and install.

How Does This Razer Synapse Vulnerability Work?

Finding about this Razer Synapse vulnerability and following the demonstration of the security researcher on Twitter, the BleepingComputer publication made a test to see how it works and shared its details. They used a Razer mouse they found. According to their conclusions, the bug works like this:

  • They chose one of their computers that ran Windows 10 and possessed privileges that were non-admin.
  • In the command prompt, they built a temporary ‘Test’ user.
  • Then they plugged the Razer mouse into Windows 10.
  • They saw how the automatic download and installation of Razer Synapse software and the driver began.
  • System privileges were achieved by Razer’s installation software.
  • This was because a Windows process that had system privileges was made use of to initiate the RazerInstaller.exe executable.
  • What happens after the Razer Synapse program gets deployed?
  • Well, you can choose the folder location where this can be installed because the wizard setup allows you to have this option and this is the moment when the exploitation might commence.
  • A ‘Choose a Folder’ window will show when you alter the location of your folder.
  • Then you can initiate an “Open Powershell here” by holding Shift and right-clicking on the window.
  • In the Folder window, a Powershell prompt will be launched.
  • This means that the Powershell prompt will have system privileges because it was opened via a process that possessed these.
  • The PowerShell prompt can be opened, then the command ‘whoami” reveals that the console is one with system privileges.
  • Following this step, any command can be initiated on the machine.

What Did the Researcher Say About This?

The vulnerability in the Razer Synapse software was discovered, as I mentioned above, by security researcher jonhat. He initially reached out to the company, but he got no response and he decided to make a Twitter post about it. He also shared a video there where he illustrated how this Razer Synapse vulnerability works.

Video Source

Later on, on the same Twitter page, he announced that the company Razer contacted him back and they discussed professionally with him, by assuring him of remuneration for his efforts even if the bug has already been brought to the public’s attention.

Getting system privileges in Windows is dangerous as this will facilitate the exploitation of the targeted operating system and the running of any command that can also propagate malware, leading to the system’s entire takeover. Razer Synapse software is very popular as 100 million users over the world use it as it permits them to perform hardware configuration, buttons mapping, or macros set-up.

The technology enterprise assured the researcher who discovered this flaw of their immediate action on the topic.

I would like to update that I have been reached out by @Razer and ensured that their security team is working on a fix ASAP. Their manner of communication has been professional and I have even been offered a bounty even though publicly disclosing this issue.

How to detect your Razer Device in Synapse 3

How to Fix Razer Synapse Not Detecting a Mouse or Keyboard

When Razer Synapse doesn't recognize your Razer mouse or keyboard, it could indicate that the peripheral isn't working properly. Beyond that, you can't customize the device or load the profiles needed for your game. Here's how to fix Razer Synapse not detecting a mouse or keyboard.

These instructions apply to all keyboards and mice sold by Razer. However, keyboard and mouse issues likely aren't tied to the Razer desktop software. Instead, the problem may stem from connections between the peripherals and the PC.

Causes of Razer Synapse Not Recognizing Your Mouse

There are several reasons Razer Synapse may not work. It's a device management program. Any incompatibility between Synapse, Windows, the device drivers, and the device result in issues. Mostly, this comes down to making sure that everything is kept up-to-date, but there can be other problems that are harder to pin down, like dirty or bad USB ports.

How to Fix Razer Synapse Not Detecting Your Mouse or Keyboard

These steps can help you diagnose and solve potential issues with Razer Synapse. Steps are ordered from simplest and most likely to most difficult and least likely to help you save time and get back to work as quickly as possible.

  1. Unplug and reconnect the peripheral. Sometimes, there's an issue with the connection. If you think it might be the port, plug the peripheral into a different port.

  2. Use a different PC. Test it on a different PC to be sure the USB port isn't the problem. If it doesn't work there, your device may have hardware issues, like a bad USB connector or cable.

This also applies to wireless mice, provided you rely on a USB-based dongle.

  3. Reboot the PC. Sometimes a simple reboot is all that's needed to get everything working again.

  4. Scan for device changes. This refreshes Device Manager. Windows 10 may not initially recognize your connected peripheral. Performing a refresh forces Windows 10 to re-scan the PC and all its ports for new additions. If it discovers the mouse or keyboard, Windows 10 automatically installs the necessary drivers.

  5. Uninstall and reinstall devices. A major cause for mouse and keyboard detection errors is the number of unnecessary—and possibly conflicting—drivers. You may see listings for Human Interface Device (HID) components that you don't need, like older mice and keyboards you sold for some extra cash. Having a long list of HID components isn't unusual, but if you have problems detecting a new mouse or keyboard, removing those devices may help.

    1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
    2. Expand Keyboards and uninstall all HID Keyboard Device and Razer-labeled entries.
    3. Expand Miceand other pointing devices and uninstall all HID-compliant mouse and Razer-based entries.
    4. Restart the PC.
  6. Update the serial bus controllers. The drivers running your PC's USB ports may need an update. This is a simple attempt to fix the issues through Windows 10 before downloading and installing new drivers from your OEM or motherboard manufacturer.

  7. Install the latest drivers. You can do this in a few ways:

    • Use pre-installed software: Many OEMs like HP and Dell install software that scans their pre-built PCs for outdated drivers and tunes the system. Open the app and scan your PC at any time to search for new drivers.
    • Download from OEMs: OEMs like HP and Dell fine-tune drivers provided by hardware manufacturers to work optimally on your desktop or laptop configuration. Download and install drivers from OEMs for the best, stable performance. But there are situations, like downloading the latest drivers for your discrete GPU, where non-OEM downloads are an exception.
    • Download motherboard drivers: For home-built systems, download drivers directly from hardware manufacturers. In this case, grab the latest motherboard drivers from ASRock, Asus, Biostar, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, and others.
  8. Uninstall and reinstall Synapse. With the hardware options out of the way and still no positive results, uninstalling Razer Synapse is the next step.

You'll also need to make sure that there are no lingering Razer folders, which may mess up a new install with a faulty configuration.

    1. Open File Manager > Program Files (x86).
    2. Delete all Razer-related folders.
    3. On the File Manager toolbar, select View, then select the Hidden check box to show hidden files and folders.
    4. Select OS (C:) in the address bar to navigate back to the root directory.
    5. Open the ProgramData folder, then delete the Razer folder.
  9. Check the Synapse version. If Windows 10 recognizes your Razer mouse or keyboard, but these don't show up in Razer Synapse, the devices may not be compatible with the Synapse version installed on your PC. Razer Synapse 3 is in beta and doesn't support all Razer-branded devices.

If your Razer device isn't supported, download the legacy Razer Synapse 2 desktop software.

How to Use Razer Synapse Software – Features

Razer Synapse mouse customization

Razer Synapse keyboard customization

The customize tab lets you re-assign any button on your mouse or keyboard to another function, this can be a mouse press, keyboard press, profile switch, the Razer Hypershift fn layer and recorded macros amongst other things.

The performance tab is where you set your DPI of the mouse, pretty simple stuff here, you can set multiple stages as well as each stage’s DPI, I wouldn’t recommend it but you can also set per-axis DPI, if you want your horizontal/vertical axis to be more or less sensitive.

You can also set your polling rate here as well as open up windows mouse settings.

Razer Synapse - Lighting

The lighting tab is where you get all of your RGB goodness, you can pick up from a selection of quick effects including;

  • Breathing
  • Fire
  • Reactive
  • Ripple
  • Spectrum Cycling
  • Starlight
  • Static
  • Wave

With Chroma Studio you can build your own lighting effect profiles or download community created ones from Razer, there’s also a reddit community that actively shares Chroma profiles at /r/ChromaProfiles.

How to import Chroma Profiles into Synapse

  • Open Synapse
  • Go to dashboard
  • Click on your keyboard or mouse
  • Go to the lighting tab
  • Click on advanced to open Chrome Studio
  • At the top there’s a drop down menu called “chroma effect”
  • To the right of that is 3 dots.
  • Click the 3 dots then hit import
  • Locate the .ChromaEffects file you downloaded and hit okay

Lastly, on the calibration tab, you can add your surfaces and your mouse calibrate with your mouse pad, from here you can also set your lift off distance, generally as a default, try going for a low LOD.

Razer Synapse Modules

Razer Synapse 3 is built from the ground up to support modular plugins so that you don’t have a huge piece of software running unless you need the features, currently the two main modules for Synapse are the Macro recording module and the Chroma Studio module, you must install these modules to enable macro recording and custom Chroma profiles.

Here are all the available modules for Synapse:

  • Alexa: Turns your Razer laptop into an Alexa smart device
  • Chroma Studio: Set up custom lighting
  • Philips Hue: Sync your Razer Chroma to Hue bulbs
  • Chroma Connect: Integrate RGB with other apps and games
  • Chroma Visualizer: Sync your RGB with games and music
  • Macro: Program sequences to execute at the push of a button
  • Nanoleaf: Sync Nanoleaf with your Razer light settings.

Razer Synapse – troubleshooting

Razer Synapse not opening

From Razer’s site:

Please be sure your OS (Operating System) and Razer Synapse 3 are up to date with all the latest updates.

  • To obtain all the latest updates to Synapse 3 please unplug any Razer peripherals from your system.
  • Once your devices are unplugged you should be able to open Razer Synapse 3 and you will be able to follow the steps below.
    • If you are not able to open Razer Synapse 3, please uninstall Synapse 3 from your system and reinstall the latest version of Synapse 3 here.
  • From there, please click on the “gear icon” in the upper right corner of Razer Synapse 3.
  • Then click on “About”.
  • Then select “Check for Updates”.

If this doesn’t work, double check that your device is compatible with Synapse 3, you might have to use Synapse 2 if you’re using an older Legacy device.

Failing that, a clean uninstall and reinstall of the latest version of Synapse is your best bet, use something like Revo Uninstaller to insure a clean install.

Razer Synapse not detecting mouse, keyboard or headset

First and foremost, check that your device is compatible with Synapse 3, you might have to use Synapse 2 if you’re using an older device.

If your device is a compatible one, it’s time to check on the USB connection, make sure the wire isn’t damaged and try several USB ports.

If you USB connection is healthy, the next step is to reinstall Synapse.

If Synapse is updated and good to go, you can try to reinstall drivers.

  1. Uninstall Synapse
  2. Press Windows + R, type “devmgmt.msc” in the dialogue box and press Enter.
  3. In device manager, open the drop downs for keyboards and mice, right click each entry and click uninstall device Uninstall drivers if your mouse isn't being detected
  4. Restart and install Synapse again

If all that fails it might be time to contact Razer support.

How to uninstall Razer Synapse

In Windows 10, click the start menu and search for “Add or Remove programs”, launching that will open a dialog, in there you can find Razer Synapse and click the uninstall button.

How to uninstall Razer Synapse

Razer Synapse 3 vs Razer Synapse 2

Razer Synapse is the third version of Razer’s unified hardware configuration tool. It’s mainly a user experience update, you can configure devices just as well in Synapse 2. Synapse 3 features fewer devices than Synapse 2, but that will change as Razer continues to add support for more legacy devices.

Both Synapse version have access to Chrome studio and profiles.

Synapse 2 is currently more stable and tested, though from my experience so far, Synapse 3 doesn’t seem unstable. Synapse 3 is currently only available on PC, Synapse 2 is available on PC and Mac.
