Ho’okahi no makia
Nana I kuhikuhi mai
Perpetual is the righteousness
That comes from the Father above
Let us gather together
In His goodness and grace

Chorus:
Praised be God
In the high heavens
His laying down
For our lives

We gather together
Parents and children
As one in mind
As one in heart

Here we all are
Joyfully praising
In the name of the Lord
Jehovah of the Sabbath

Arise all ye saints
Stand fast for righteousness
Forever faithful
In the goodness of the Spirit

This renowned union
In the works of righteousness
The Sabbath day throng
Of the twilight

Here we all are
Having gathered together To witness the works
And celebrate the Jubilee

Ye wearied laborers
Comfort and Salvation to your minds
Throught the goodness of the Spirit
That we may live
One in purpose
He, the Lord, directs
The work that is inspired
For the good of us all

Pupu ‘O Ni’ihau – Words by Mary Robins, Music by Johnny Noble

Pupu ‘o Ni’ihau ‘auhea ‘oe
Ho’ike a’e ‘oe i kou nani

He nani hiehie ‘oi kelakela
Ka ‘i’ini nui ia o ku’u pu’uwai

Ho mai kou aloha a pili me a’u
I ko’olua noho kahi mehameha

I luna maua a’o Ha’upu
‘Upu a’e ke aloha nou e ka ipo

Ka moena pawahe he’e iko ili
I pumehana like a’i ho’i kaua

Ka ua Naulu noho I ka uka
Ho’opulu ana ‘oe I ka palai

E ka wai huna ho’i aka Pao’o
O ka wai kaulana ana kupuna

E kanalu hai mai ‘ao ‘ohi’a
Me na ulu hua noho i ka Hapapa

Aia ia ku hai moana kau aloha
Me ka paepae kapu a Hi’iaka

He alu no wau e o mai’oe
Pupu o Ni’ihau ‘auhea ‘oe

Ha’ina ‘ia mai an kaupuana
Pupu ‘o Ni’ihau ‘auhea ‘oe
Shells of Ni’ihau, where are you?
Display your beauty

An elegant beauty held supreme
It’s the greatest desire of my heart

Your love is drawn here, cling to me
Just to be alone in each other’s presence

We two were in the heights of Ha’upu
Love surges only for you

The fine woven mats resemble the skin of the squid
Come, it will warm the two of us

The Naulu rain of the uplands
Drenches the palai fern

Go to the hiddern water of Pao’o
Of the famous cavern of the ancestors

The priest brings offerings of ‘ohi’a buds
With breadfruit from Hapapa

There the offerings are placed in the ocean with love
And stacked and consecrated to Hi’iaka

When I call you must answer
Shells of Ni’ihau, where are you?

Tell the story about
The shells of Ni’ihau, where are you?

Source:  This old love song may have been taken from a mele by Kauanuaulu Waili’ula.  The pupu lei of Ni’ihau is the most prized shell lei of Hawaii.  The true Ni’ihau shell is the small Kahelelani named for the benevolent chief of this island.  The Kahelelani comes in brown, yellow, white, speckled, red and pink; red and pink being the rarest and most valuable.  The larger shell Momiokai (white), Lenalena (yellow), Onikiniki (speckled), Laiki (rice shell), Uliuli (blue), Kahakaha (golden striped) are also used for leis.  They are strung into lei styles called tutu, kaneli’I (man’s lei), poepoe, poleholeho, hale, pololei (sweetheart or wedding) and pikake.  Verse 5-10 from Ea Collection.

O-Zone

Moldovan pop music trio

For other uses, see O-Zone (disambiguation).

Not to be confused with Ozone (American band).

O-Zone were a MoldovanEurodance group that was active from 1999 to 2005. Originating in 1998 as a duo consisting of Dan Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi before the latter's departure, their official trio lineup in 1999 consisted of Dan Bălan, Radu Sîrbu, and Arsenie Todiraș.[1]

The group gained global popularity with their song "Dragostea Din Tei" and their subsequent album DiscO-Zone.

The group re-united in 2017 for two concerts in Chișinău and Bucharest and in 2019 for one concert in Bucharest.

History[edit]

1998–2001: Formation and early years[edit]

O-Zone first formed as a duo of Dan Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi in 1998.[2] They released their first album, Dar, Unde Ești..., in 1999. However, Jelihovschi had not intended to make music in his career, so he split from Balan. Undaunted, Balan held open auditions for new band members. At one such audition, he met Arsenie "Arsenium" Todiraș, who eventually won over the initially skeptical Bălan with his version of Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender". Bălan and Todiraș would have proceeded as a duo act until Balan received a call from Radu Sîrbu, who wanted a chance to audition for the group. Despite Sîrbu having missed the initial auditions, Bălan agreed, and after a successful audition, Sîrbu joined O-Zone, officially making the group a trio.

2002–2004: Rise to success[edit]

In 2002, O-Zone moved from Moldova to Bucharest, Romania, hoping to gain more recognition. There, the group became an instant hit band with their upbeat song "Despre Tine" ("About You"), which held the top position on the Romanian Top 100 chart for three weeks in February 2003. Their second hit, which brought them worldwide attention, was "Dragostea Din Tei", translated roughly as "Love from the Linden Trees". It quickly became popular in Romania, where it also topped the Romanian singles chart for four weeks in September 2003, but faded from popularity by the end of 2003.[3] However, the song gained popularity in Italy when the little-known duo Haiducii released a cover of "Dragostea Din Tei", which topped the Italian pop charts.[3] Arsenie Todiraș later said that at the time that, while not illegal, Haiducii's cover felt like a betrayal because the group had not asked permission to make a cover.[3] However, the cover's success led to curiosity about the original artist, and led to Time Records, an Italian record label, offering O-Zone a one-year contract.[3] Soon after the song's release in Italy, it was also released in various other countries in Europe under Polydor Records and became an instant hit.[3]

"Dragostea Din Tei" topped the singles charts of nearly a dozen European countries in 2004. It reached the top-10 in many other countries, including in the United Kingdom, where it reached number 3 on the singles chart.[4] The re-release of "Despre Tine" in 2004 from the same album had similar success across Europe.

In contrast to their multi-platinum status in Europe, O-Zone never entered the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the United States,[5] although it did reach the 14th position on the Hot Dance Airplay chart.[6] The viral video "Numa Numa Dance" helped to boost awareness of "Dragostea Din Tei" in the U.S.,[7] but, while the song received moderate to major airplay, most Americans knew it simply as the "Numa Numa Song" and never knew the name of the original song or the group that performed it. "Dragostea din tei" was sampled in the song "Live Your Life" by T.I. and Rihanna, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in late 2008.[8]

2005: O-Zone split up[edit]

On 13 January 2005, while still very popular, the members of O-Zone announced their disbandment,[2] citing personal reasons.[9] Their last European concert was held at the 2005 Golden Stag music festival in Romania.[10]

Also in 2005, Japanese music label Avex Trax gained distribution rights for O-Zone music in Japan and released the album DiscO-Zone in August 2005 in the country.[6] The album, which features the song "Dragostea Din Tei", became immensely successful in Japan. Topping the Oricon albums charts, it reached over 800,000 sales in 2005 alone and became the 12th-most popular album of 2005,[11] partially because the album was re-released twice by Avex Trax. DiscO-Zone ended up charting for over a year on the Oricon weekly albums chart[12] and sold over one million copies overall.[13]

On 17 December 2019, Dan Bălan, Radu Sîrbu and Arsenie Todiraş announced that O-Zone would be performing for one concert, which took place on New Year's Eve 2019 in Bucharest as part of performances by stars of the 90s and 00s called Revelion 2020 Disco Night Fever. After the event, all three returned to their projects again. The exception was the collaboration of Radu and Arsenie for the song "Lay Down".

WHERE ARE THEY NOW? "Numa Numa Guy" Is Creating The Next CollegeHumor

gary-brolsma-numa-numa.jpgGary Brolsma had just graduated from high school and started working at "Expert PC" in Saddlebrook, NJ when he made his infamous "Numa Numa Dance" video.

"I didn't plan to make the video," Brolsma told us over a series of phone calls and emails. The New Jersey native said he was bored, had his web cam on, and decided to make a funny video to send around to his friends.

He lip-synced to the song "Dragostea din tei" by Moldovan pop group O-Zone and gave the performance of a lifetime. "Someone once described it to me that it's kind of like one of those moments when you're singing in the shower," Brolsma told us when we asked him why he thinks the video caught fire.

Recently, Brolsma has been working on a project called "Numa Network." Here's how Chris Pierdomenico of Numa Network described the website:

"Numa Network brings in various production companies throughout the country. The production companies still own their work, we merely act as a distributor."

Brolsma and Pierdomenico tell us that Numa Network will be similar to CollegeHumor and comedy videos "will always be the centerpiece." The website is slated to launch on July 9th, and in the meantime, Brolsma is working part-time as a "Field Specialist" for Sarizer Motor Company.

Gary Brolsma himself will be releasing several new videos for the launch of Numa Network while he is looking at a long-term goal of creating one video per week.

On making a successful viral video, here's what the "Numa Numa Guy" told us:

"A lot of the people on the Internet have short attention spans... It'd have to be short and funny. Something extraordinary has to happen to catch their attention."

As for his original hit, the video runs for 98 seconds and was uploaded by Gary Brolsma himself to Newgrounds on December 6, 2004. By the end of 2006, statistics from The Viral Factory showed that the "Numa Numa Dance" had been watched 700 million times – making it the second most watched video of all time behind only "Star Wars Kid." Research from TubeMogul shows that Brolsma's performance gained an additional 130 million views since November 2006; thus, giving the "Numa Numa Dance" a total hovering around 830 million views.

gary-brolsma-singingGary Brolsma showed absolutely no fear in his on-camera appearance because he was already an experienced performer. His band The Nonetheless have been playing together since 1998 with Brolsma taking the microphone as the lead singer.

Despite his on-camera showmanship, Brolsma revealed to us that he is generally a shy person and didn't quite know how to handle his sudden viral fame as the "Numa Numa Guy." Instead of immediately cashing in on his video's success, Brolsma laid low, continued working at "Expert PC," and kept playing with his band.

It looked as if Gary "Numa Numa Guy" Brolsma would take after Ghyslain "Star Wars Kid" Raza and hide from the spotlight created by his viral dance. Eventually though Brolsma would soon learn to embrace his viral video after a meeting with Jaeter Corporation – a company specializing in media creation and business management websites. With his viral stock still through the roof, Brolsma was approached by Jaeter Corporation with the idea to create a new video.

"We sat down over the weekend, and mutually decided to make a sequel for my fans," Brolsma told us. "Once again using a foreign song, but this time to have a little more production, with a studio involved."

The "Numa Numa Guy" officially made his comeback on September 6, 2006 with "New Numa." The video differed drastically from the original "Numa Numa Dance" with professional video production by Experience Studios and a custom song by Variety Beats.

In conjunction with the new upload, Brolsma launched a contest for fans to make their own "New Numa" video and the 50 best videos received a total of $45,000 from the contest sponsors. Brolsma was happy with the finished product, but it never caught on like the original.

"Looking back on it, I believe that Experience Studios did a great job on the video, but the video as a whole didn't capture the whole 'pureness' factor that was found in the first video."

After the "New Numa" contest was over, Jaeter Corporation then set up a meeting between Gary Brolsma and Dan Balan, a former founding member of O-Zone. "He loved my video," said Brolsma.

With the massive rise in popularity of "Dragostea din tei" because of Brolsma's "Numa Numa Dance," Balan released a re-make of his song called "Sugar Tunes Numa Numa." After the two did album and DVD signings at a FYE store in New York City, Brolsma got a chance to listen through Balan's upcoming album.

"After hearing his album, when I went to make my third Numa Numa video, I liked using Dan Balan's new song, 'Crazy Loop.' I returned to just me and my webcam."

The "Numa Numa Guy" would gain more mainstream exposure in the subsquent years when he starred in a 2009 Geico ad and appeared in a 2010 Super Bowl television commercial for Vizio. (He made it clear though that while he was paid for these appearances, neither Geico nor Vizio are his sponsors.)
