Surfside Beach offers last-minute relief to council candidates

Surfside Beach Town Council candidate LaVerne Kreklau questioned town officials Monday about an ordinance that prohibits candidates from leaving campaign literature at homes. Kreklau asked the council to suspend the policy ahead of the town elections. His request stemmed from an Oct. 5 email from the town clerk’s office reminding the candidates that leaving door hangers at homes when nobody is home is a violation of town law. Kreklau said this year is the first time that part of the ordinance has been invoked to limit political campaigns.

Georgetown diesel price check reveals $0.16 savings at cheapest station

(GEORGETOWN, SC) Your choice of gas station could be costing you as much as $0.16 if you’re buying diesel in Georgetown, according to a recent price survey. The survey looked at prices across the greater Georgetown area, and found that the cheapest gallon of diesel as of Tuesday was $3.13, at Shell at 1200 Church St. By comparison, the most expensive was $3.29, listed at Gene's Country Store at 3630 Highmarket St.

Columbia-raised sea turtle being rereleased in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN — Journey, a two-year-old green sea turtle, will find a new home when he is rereleased off of Georgetown's shores on Oct. 14. Through a partnership with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Riverbanks Zoo & Garden in Columbia has been taking turtle hatchlings, raising them in their aquariums and rereleasing them for several years.

Lichfield woman scammed out of $500

Man charged with killing Harry Barkley now back in Georgetown County

CBHS student charged with having a knife on campus

Hempel was already in custody following a high-speed police chase in Tennessee, where he now awaits extradition back to South Carolina to face these charges.

Two dead after a shooting in the Oatland area of Georgetown County

Two people are dead as a result of shootings that took place in the Oatland area of Georgetown County late Monday.At around 10 PM, deputies and EMS were rushed to a home on Sutton Road.Jason Lesley, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, says deputies found a woman deceased and a man seriously wounded when they arrived. The man was pronounced dead at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. The woman died on the scene.Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway has identified the victims as Ben Franklin, Jr, 38, and Kiashia Green, 25, both of Georgetown. An incident report released this morning states when deputies arrived at the scene in the 600 block of Sutton Road, they were met by a group of individuals “saying to hurry behind the residence where a single-wide trailer was located.”That is where they found Franklin on the ground. A deputy performed CPR until EMS arrived. While the deputies were tending to Franklin, someone on the scene yelled “what about the female inside?” A deputy found Green on the floor in the kitchen. The deputies asked some of the people on the scene if they knew who was responsible for the shooting. The deputies were told a gray Impala left the area. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the deaths should call 843-546-5101.
