At first you notice that LED headlight. That aggressive front. That predatory stance. When you come closer, you feel its steel fuel tank and multiple high-quality cast parts. In the end you realize that the design and production standards of this bike were set sky-high. Just like its big brother, the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R, the KTM 125 DUKE looks like a naked, angry, untamed little beast.

TFT display

As an absolute first in its class, the KTM 125 DUKE boasts an innovative multicolor TFT display, presenting all the data you need to go faster in a clear-cut, uncluttered way. As you rev the engine, the display bars change color, either spurring you on or telling you to back off when the engine’s still cold. The display also automatically adapts its color to best suit the light conditions around you. Innovation at its best!!!

LED headlight

The aggressively styled LED headlight on the KTM 125 DUKE is a big highlight in this bike’s design and a clear referral to its big brother, the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R. Practical as well as looking ultra-mean, it produces outstanding visibility for riding in low light or dark conditions. The parking light, which consists of 20 LEDs, ensures that the bike is highly visible to other road users, keeping you safe while you dominate the streets.

Following significant new model introductions in enduro for the previous two years, KTM announces “refined and updated” EXC models for the 2019 line-up.

KTM remain the biggest selling enduro motorcycle manufacturer by a good chalk and in the last two years the Austrian manufacturer has made some big changes to the line-up to stay ahead of the game: a ground-up redesign across all models for 2017 marked a new era before the world’s first serial-production, fuel-injected, two-stroke off-road competition machines – the 250 and 300 EXC TPI models – changed the game for MY18.

aktm_250_zexc-f_my_2019_studio_enduro21

For 2019, as you’d expect, the changes are a little less ground-breaking but still show progression. It shows too that KTM is taking development forward with R&D and race team input plus they are also using customer feedback to improve performance and reliability. There's also a continued commitment to the 125 and 150 XC-W models.

aktm_250_300_exc-tpi_90de_ri_stripped_my19_enduro21

2019 EXC model highlights:

  • Improved settings on the standard WP Xlpor forks and shock
  • Stronger battery performance
  • New graphics
  • New seat design
  • Factory-look orange frame

New WP forks

aktm_exc_my2019_fork_enduro21

New WP Xplor 48mm fork settings on the 2019 model will be slightly stiffer to help reduce bottoming out under hard compression and help the wheel keep better contact with the ground upon rebound.

Complimenting shock

aktm_exc_my2019_shock_absorber_enduro21

The WP Xplor PDS shock absorber changes for 2019 too. The reworking focuses on the main shock piston design to be stiffer and match the new front suspension setting.

New look

aktm_250_exc-f_my_2019_studio_enduro21

Looking good is crucial and marking the 2019 model range apart is a new graphics kit and notably the orange side panels. The biggest change though is the orange frame, mimicking the factory race bikes.

New look Six Days Models

Not forgetting the all-new look Six Days models across the EXC range with the ISDE Chile graphics...

New seat

ktm_150_xc-w_90de_above_my19_enduro21

The new seat design for 2019 now has strips or blocks across the rear to aid grip in wet or muddy conditions.

125 and 150 XC-W

ktm_125_xc-w_eu_90de_ri_my19_enduro21

More power, a narrower engine and a new clutch are the highlights of the 125 and 150 two-strokes which remain carbureted but very much part of the KTM enduro line-up.

Stronger Battery

aktm_exc_battery_my19_enduro21

Following ongoing development, all models (except the 125 which has no e-start) will have a new and more powerful lithium ion battery with an electrical capacity of 2 Ah. The change is designed to improve power and reliability under tough riding conditions. This includes the 150 XC-W model.

“The last two years have been incredibly exciting for our Enduro machine development here at KTM,” commented KTM Senior Product Manager Offroad, Joachim Sauer.

“A brand new ground-breaking generation for model year 2017 that had been re-designed from the ground up, followed by a world first for model year 2018 thanks to the serial-production fuel-injection two-stroke off-road competition models with the KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI; it’s been an incredibly fast-moving but fruitful few years.

“Model year 2019 sees some key adjustments across all models, along with more in-depth refinements for our KTM 125 XC-W and KTM 150 XC-W machines. As we step into a new era of enduro as a whole, we are looking forward to the latest KTM EXC models reaching dealer floor.”

aktm_350_exc-f_my_2019_enduro21

To accompany the new KTM EXC model line-up there’s a new line of high-quality, high-performance KTM Power Parts riding gear and casual clothing range. As always there’s also a large selection of KTM PowerParts if you want to pimp your machine whether it’s for aesthetics or performance.

Yesterday in Rome, Italy, Austrian-based motorcycle manufacturer unveiled their 2019 KTM models with the help of Ryan Dungey. Dirt Bike Rider ran a Facebook Live video from the event, which you can watch here.

And you’ve probably already seen the images for the 2019 KTM 250 SX-F, 350 SX-F and 450 SX-F and the 2019 KTM 125 SX, 150 SX and 250 SX two-strokes on dirtbikerider.com (if not, hit the links to view huge galleries). Now KTM has followed up with further details.

We’ll have a lot of content coming your way both on our website and in the magazine in the coming weeks so keep it locked to DBR, including our ridden, ragged and rated tests. But in the meantime, here’s KTM’s 2019 SX models announcement:

KTM is dominating the battle. In the championships around the world over the last 10 years, the Austrian brand has been the consistent performer in the fight for competition supremacy. Tony Cairoli’s ninth FIM Motocross World Championship title last season, as well as the first for the star of the show, the KTM 450 SX-F, was a true highlight. Pauls Jonass’ MX2 World Championship continued the orange brand’s dominance in the class with nine victories in 10 seasons for the KTM 250 SX-F, while the 2017 AMA 450 Supercross title was won in the hands of Ryan Dungey prior to his retirement. KTM has also enjoyed race wins in both the 250SX and 450SX classes this season with Shane McElrath, Jordon Smith and Marvin Musquin at the helm.

2019 KTM 450 SX-F

To continue adding to these incredible achievements requires a strong motivation, a commitment to development for racing and investment in KTM’s talent development programs. This creates the best platform for the KTM SX range, as these world-winning technologies are tested in the heat of the battle prior to being available on serial production machinery. The KTM 50 SX, KTM 65 SX and KTM 85 SX sportminicycles provide a strong basis for juniors to step up to the adult ranks where the KTM 125 SX, KTM 150 SX and KTM 250 SX 2-strokes, along with the KTM 250 SX-F, KTM 350 SX-F and KTM 450 SX-F 4-stroke machines provide the sharpest weapon in each class.

2019 KTM Chassis

For model year 2019, all adult models receive a generation-changing update with KTM engineers targeting a further weight reduction that once again sets a clear benchmark in each class. In fact, in the higher capacity 450cc segment the KTM 450 SX-F is a lot lighter than its rivals. All SX models feature a re-worked frame for improved stiffness, handling and straight-line stability, a longer subframe, a revised rear axle slot and all-new bodywork for enhanced ergonomics with more freedom of movement. A brand-new appearance with new graphics compliments a newly-shaped seat and new fuel tank. A new air filter box offers improved protection of the air filter and better air flow with revised exhaust systems for both the 2-strokes and 4-strokes that contributes to a more efficient power delivery and improved performance.

2019 KTM 450 SX-F Frame

New radiators offer efficient cooling with improved positioning for mass centralization, while a stronger lithium-ion battery for the E-starter is harmonious with the re-worked wiring harness for a compact electrical system. An updated triple clamp system for improved handling compliments new suspension settings, while a newly-developed, dual purpose, plug-in stand is yet another feature of the new range. All models continue to enjoy impressive serial components such as Brembo brakes, WP suspension, NEKEN handlebar, Dunlop tires, plus a map select switch with integrated traction control, launch control and map selection on the 4-stroke machines. This is no refinement model year, it’s an evolution; around 60% of each bike’s components are new.

2019 KTM Engine

2019 KTM 450 SX-F Engine Inside Left

All models in the KTM SX range have received major engine revisions over previous models. The KTM 250 SX-F and KTM 350 SX-F models enjoy a newly designed DS clutch, while all 4-strokes boast revised transmissions and a state-of-the-art Keihin engine management system with a reworked throttle body and improved electronics package. The KTM 125 SX, KTM 150 SX and KTM 250 SX all offer revised carburettor settings, with a new transmission and new clutch in each amongst other improvements. In addition to engine refinements on all models, the highlight KTM 450 SX-F model enjoys a newly developed SOHC cylinder head for reduced weight and improved mass centralisation, a new camshaft with a shorter valve timing and improved surface along with a low-friction chain guide with a DLC coating.

2019 KTM 250/350 SX-F Clutch

For those looking to intensify their ride and fine tune their machines to their own individual requirements, KTM has created a full range of aesthetical and performance parts available in its KTM PowerParts collection. Developed in parallel to the new SX generation from conception to production, and by some of the finest engineers in the world at KTM in conjunction with leading accessories manufacturers, this wide choice of products can certainly take each SX model to new heights. Not only that, the KTM PowerWear range provides a diverse catalogue of READY TO RACE, high-quality products for those gearing up for the toughest of battles. With protective gear, riding wear and casual wear on offer, riders can look great both on and off the track.

2019 KTM 350 SX-F Engine Inside Right

“After the race is before the race. This is certainly a statement that we at KTM live by. Once again we enjoyed incredible success around the globe with our offroad teams last season, but this is a testament to all the hard work of those involved and especially to the R&D teams in both Mattighofen, Austria and the USA; racing success is part of the motivation that ensures we continue producing READY TO RACE serial machinery right out of the crate,” said Joachim Sauer, KTM Senior Product Manager Offroad.

“A tireless strive to continue thinking and re-thinking on how we can develop our machines has led us to the next generation of KTM SX models that will soon be available on the market. There are some serious revisions over previous models with the KTM 450 SX-F a true highlight with its incredible handling thanks to its lightweight and powerhouse engine. Our program to develop the next generation of raw talent is complemented by a full range of models from the KTM 50 SX to bikes capable of racing at Grand Prix level. Our goal is clear – setting the benchmark in motocross technology by creating the sharpest weapons for the job, for amateurs to the pros,” concluded Sauer.

2019 KTM 690 SMC R - Review

KTM comes out of the gate early with their release of the 2019 EXC, XC-W and XC line up. You will notice that some of the 2018.5 450 SX-F Factory Edition changes have spilled over to the off-road lineup and it looks like KTM is also bringing both the 250 and 300 XC-W TPI bikes to North America this year. Read all about KTM's 2019 off-road model lineup below.

KTM has a long tradition of making high-end off-road competition motorcycles. The 250 and 300 cc XC-W TPI models are now both fitted with the revolutionary TPI serial fuel injection and have set new standards in the 2-stroke off-road segment. TPI stands for „transfer port injection”; a global-first, groundbreaking technology for 2-stroke racing engines that delivers a previously unattainable combination of top performance and outstanding rideability. No more jetting combined with a massive reduction of fuel consumption while the lubrication is taken care by an electronically controlled oil pump instead of using premix.

On the 4-stroke side, KTM offers the well-known range from the super easy to ride 250 EXC-F to the all-rounder 350 EXC-F to the big thumper 500 EXC-F.

CHASSIS GENERAL

FRAME

The frames of all KTM off-road models are manufactured from lightweight sections of top-quality chrome-molybdenum steel tubing of various cross sections. This type of frame design provides high torsional rigidity for best handling and rideability, while a certain longitudinal flexibility can absorb the wheel impact energy, supporting the suspension for reduced rider fatigue. At the same time, the frame triangle serves to deliver the coolant from the cylinder head directly to the radiators. In the TPI models, the frame design also serves to route engine oil from a filler cap assembly, located between the fuel tank and the steering head, via a hose inside the upper frame tube to the oil tank.

SWINGARM

This swing arm design allows for an optimal mounting position of the PDS (progressive damping system) rear shock ensuring a high progression rate. The single-component casting process eliminates any inconsistencies and weak points that would be inherent in a welded swing arm.

FORKS

All EXC models are fitted with the latest WP XPlor 48 upside-down forks, a split fork design developed by WP Performance Systems and KTM. It is fitted with springs on both sides but separate damping functions. Compression damping is on the left and the rebound on the right-hand side without influencing each other. Therefore damping can easily be adjusted via the dials on top of both fork tubes with a range of 30 clicks each.

Already distinguished by the outstanding response and damping characteristics the fork features an updated slightly stiffer setting for model year 2019 keeping the front end higher and providing increased reserves against bottoming out.

NEW:

  • Updated, slightly stiffer fork setting → improved feedback and more bottoming resistance

SHOCK ABSORBER

Fitted to all EXC-F and XC-W models, the WP XPlor PDS shock absorber is the key element of the proven and successful PDS rear suspension design (Progressive Damping System) where the shock is directly linked to the swing arm without an additional linkage system. Optimal damping progression for offroad duty is achieved by a second damping piston in combination with a closed cup towards the end of the stroke, and supported by a progressive shock spring. This means the XPlor PDS shock provides excellent damping performance and a high resistance against bottoming out. An updated main piston and new settings provide improved damping characteristics and match perfectly the reworked front end set-up. Fully adjustable including high- and low-speed compression you can set the shock to any track and riders preferences.

NEW:

  • WP monoshock with reworked main piston and settings for all models → More comfort and increased bottoming control

TRIPLE CLAMPS

The EXC-F and XC-W models are fitted with highly rigid, forged triple clamps with an offset of 22 mm, providing a solid grip on the forks for precise handling. They allow forwards and backwards adjustment of the handlebars in four different positions for optimum rider ergonomics.

WHEELS & BRAKES

The KTM wheels use lightweight, CNC machined hubs and high-end, black GIANT rims to combine maximum stability and ruggedness with minimum weight.

BRAKES

BREMBO brakes have been the standard equipment on KTM’s off-road range forever, and combined with the lightweight Wave discs with diameters of 260 mm front and 220 mm on the rear wheel, they remain the class-leading system when it comes to that crucial combination of stopping power and a transparent brake feel.

COOLING SYSTEM

KTM’s proven cooling system routes the coolant from the cylinder head through the frame triangle directly to aluminum radiators made by WP Performance Systems. Due to flow calculated internal circulation and CFD optimized air ventilation, the system is superbly efficient. In addition, well thought-out radiator guards guarantee excellent protection against mud while at the same time serve as efficient crash protectors. All EXC-F’s are fitted with a radiator fan as a standard feature.

EXHAUST SYSTEM

Noise limits have become challenging for every manufacturer to meet, prompting KTM to put a lot of effort into the development of their exhaust systems. All models are fitted with state-of-the-art exhaust systems which guarantee maximum performance, low weight and conformity with the mandated noise limits.

HANDLEBAR

The tapered Neken handlebar is made of high-strength aluminum and can be is mounted in 4 different positions in order to suit different rider sizes. ODI lock-on grips make grip changes easy and do not require any wire or glue to be secured.

FOOTPEGS

KTM’s advanced ´No Dirt´ foot pegs prevent clogging up the pegs, even when digging into the side walls of deep ruts. With the specifically designed pegs for the EXC models the rider stands six millimeters higher than the ones used on SX versions for increased ground clearance. They are easy to swap though if so desired in case a rider prefers a lower position.

SEAT

Ergonomically perfect, the seat was shaped specifically for offroad requirements and features a new seat cover with foam padded stripes providing improved comfort and grip.

NEW:

  • New seat cover → improved comfort and grip

FUEL TANK

The lightweight, polyethylene tank on 2 strokes and polyamide tank on 4 strokes allows gauging the remaining fuel with just a quick glance, thanks to its see-through plastic. The filler cap features a ¼-turn bayonet mechanism with an orange quick-release button for extra fast refueling. All fuel-injected models are fitted with an integrated fuel pump system and an additional fuel level sensor, which indicates low fuel level via a warning light in the speedometer.

AIRBOX

The air box design combines maximum protection of the air filter against soiling with maximum airflow and low intake noise. The large Twin Air filter is mounted in a stiff cage, which at the same time holds the system in place, allowing extremely quick filter changes in the field without tools while minimizing the risk of incorrect filter installation.

E-STARTER & BATTERY

All models are equipped with proven electric starter systems – a super beneficial feature once the going gets tough. A new and more capable, super lightweight 2 Ah Lithium-Ion starter battery provides even better starting of the engine especially at cold weather conditions and contributes to the low vehicle weight.

NEW:

  • Stronger and super lightweight Lithium-Ion battery → better starting

BODYWORK & ERGONOMICS

The bodywork design is a direct result of close co-operation between the KTM development department, Kiska Design and all KTM factory riders, achieving complete harmony between rider and bike. The results are well-balanced ergonomics and ideally shaped contact points, maximum freedom of movement for the rider, a low seat height and astonishing levels of comfort. Intelligent design is also manifest in details like the smart solution that guides the brake hose in the headlight mask, or the I-beam structures of the front and rear fenders, which help to ensure maximum stability, low weight and reduced dirt accumulation.

GRAPHICS

A brand new, tailor-made kit of graphics in conjunction with the Factory style orange frame lets the latest EXC-F and XC-W generation stand out, making the new bikes immediately recognizable at a single glance.

NEW:

  • New graphics and orange frame → high-end Ready to Race appearance

KTM: READY FOR ANYTHING IN 2019

KTM unveiled its most comprehensive, innovative and extreme range ever when it presented five new motorcycles at the EICMA show in Milan today (Tuesday, November 6). Leading its 2019 line-up is the eagerly anticipated KTM 790 ADVENTURE and KTM 790 ADVENTURE R. “You spoke, we listened.” KTM is a riders’ company and these all-new models are a direct result of customer feedback mixed with the brand’s experience and expertise.

Punching way above their cubic capacities, with these two machines KTM sets a new performance and offroad ability benchmark in the mid-capacity travel enduro market.

The KTM 790 ADVENTURE is for travel enduro fans of every ambition and ability, ready to discover new roads whichever way it’s pointed at – no matter surface. The KTM 790 ADVENTURE R is a lightweight, agile and technically advanced machine for adventurers that endeavor to challenge themselves while challenging tricky terrain. Both powered by the 799cc LC8c parallel twin – first seen in the KTM 790 DUKE – the engine has been tuned to deliver its torque lower down the rev range to fit the specific requirements of adventure riding.

The result is smooth acceleration, plentiful performance and a 450 km range from a 20-liter tank.

Each of these rugged bikes have been developed by some of the best adventure riders in the world and in conjunction with the Red Bull KTM Rally Factory Racing Team to provide a confidence-inspiring chassis with a low center of gravity and riding ergonomics to suit riders of all sizes and spirit. A full suite of rider assistance systems, easily navigated and activated with a bar-mounted menu switch, aligned to a full color, TFT display, allow the adventurous to get the most from these machines in all situations.

Elsewhere in the KTM Travel Enduro range, the incredible KTM 1090 ADVENTURE R, KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S and KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R receive new colors and graphics to keep these exciting machines looking as sharp and bold as they perform.

Rebooting supermoto for the road, the KTM 690 SMC R returns in 2019 and takes the KTM READY TO RACE approach to its purest incarnation on the street; lightweight, agile, addictive single-cylinder punch, premium chassis components and now backed up by leading performance enhancing electronics.

Powering the KTM 690 SMC R is the latest generation LC4 engine; the world’s most powerful production single-cylinder engine dishes up a devastating 74 hp and 73.5 Nm of torque. Getting the most from this performance in all situations is a suite of rider assistance systems. Two ride modes – Street and Sport – cornering ABS, lean angle-sensitive motorcycle traction control (MTC), motor slip regulation (MSR) and Quickshifter+ are new to the game, with the familiar Supermoto ABS mode aiding rear slides with front-end confidence. All this is packaged in an updated chassis and new subframe, supported by the latest generation fully-adjustable WP APEX suspension and wrapped up in slimmer, sharper bodywork. Better still, the fun goes further with a 1.5-liter larger fuel tank.

The new KTM 690 ENDURO R is even more perfectly positioned to connect the tarmac and trails, also benefitting from the same engine, electronics and chassis improvements made to its sliding Supermoto sibling, but in a platform completely focused on offroad.

Evolution means retaining everything that was good about the previous model and building on that. Under the new seat and fresh bodywork –sharpened for both style as well as better movement on the bike – is an all-new chassis with WP XPLOR suspension derived from KTM’s world-beating EXC models. Designed to be confidence-inspiring with ease of handling, it is ready to tackle everything from easy trails to extreme offroad obstacles as well as being a competent every day street bike. Endless enduro without the need to ever trailer to the trails.

The newly developed KTM SX-E 5 is the next step in KTM’s innovative line-up. Combining class-leading knowledge in youth motorcycling with years of development work in the e-sector, the KTM SX-E 5 is based on the incredibly popular 2-stroke KTM 50 SX with a high-end chassis powered by an electric motor. The mission was clear: to create an ultra-competitive machine that is also easy to ride, even for pure beginners.

The KTM SX-E 5 enjoys the advantage of zero emissions, low noise and minimal maintenance, which makes it ideal for youngsters looking to make the first step into the world of motorcycling and thanks to its dynamic design, it is ideal for the growing rider with its adjustable seat height.

The KTM PowerPack can provide more than two hours of riding for a beginner – or 25 minutes for the faster junior racers – and with its external worldwide charger, full power is restored in approximately one hour. Coming from the READY TO RACE company, the KTM SX-E 5 will set a new benchmark within the electric-minicycle market in terms of performance, rideability, safety and serial standard.

As unveiled last month in Cologne, also joining the 2019 range is a sharper, stronger and more refined version of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT. The most radical long-distance Sports Tourer on the market takes the best from ‘The Beast’; phenomenal engine performance, street handling and race track capabilities of the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R are brought into a machine that is as happy munching massive miles in comfort as it is carving up challenging corners. Major updates to this premium machine can be found in the engine, suspension, electronics and bodywork with a focus on improving comfort and performance – be it while two-up touring, continent cruising or track attacking.

The introduction of these new models sees the 2019 KTM range as distinctive and diverse as ever, with something for riders of all ages and abilities to create unforgettable riding memories in the unique READY TO RACE style.
