Sales tax holidays 2021: Shop tax-free for clothes, school supplies in 11 states this weekend

Shoppers in 11 states can pick up clothes and school supplies tax-free this weekend.

The tax savings are open to all even those without children, but criteria vary by state. Online shopping also is tax-free during the holidays.

Connecticut and Massachusetts will offer tax breaks later in August. Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, West Virginia already held tax holidays this summer.

In some states, tax breaks are offered year-round. According to the Tax Foundation, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon don't have a sales tax.

Tax-free weekend starts this Friday. Here's what to know.

Since 1999, the Texas sales tax holiday has been used to help families prepare for the upcoming school year. The Comptroller’s Office estimated shoppers will save an estimated $107.3 million in state and local sales tax during the sales tax holiday.

“For many families with children who are going back to their school campuses for the first time since the pandemic began, the sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save money on school supplies and other tax-free items,” Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said in a statement. “As a father with three school-aged children myself, I know how these expenses can add up.”

Qualified items include clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks.

Items which still are taxable include most accessories including briefcases, hair accessories, purses, wallets and watches, among others.

Shoes are generally exempt, including general sports shoes. Specialty shoes such as golf and other cleated shoes, or tap dance or ballet shoes are not tax exempt.

According to the Comptroller’s Office, qualifying items:

Can be purchased tax free online, by telephone, phone, custom order or any other means (including in-store) when items are both delivered to and paid for by the customer during the exemption period.

A customer orders and pays for an item and the seller accepts the order during the exemption period for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the exemption period ends.

Apparel and school supplies that may be purchased tax-free are listed on the Comptroller’s website at TexasTaxHoliday.org.

Walmart is clear on its website that it participates in tax-free holidays, writing:

Sales Tax Holidays occur in a number of states throughout the year. The most common types of Sales Tax Holidays are Back-to-School, Hurricane Preparedness, and Energy Star. Walmart.com participates in these Sales Tax Holidays unless prohibited by law.

U.S. state, county, and local tax jurisdictions determine the sales tax laws that govern sales tax holidays and participation in the sales tax holiday can vary by tax jurisdiction.

The items eligible for Sales Tax Holidays are determined by the tax jurisdiction governing the specific Sales Tax Holiday…

To take advantage of reduced sales tax when using the Pickup Today feature, orders must be placed and picked up within the specified states tax holiday dates.

On a separate page, Walmart also notes:

Refer to state specific information above for full details on participating states.

Walmart also shares the following about taking advantage of sales tax savings through online orders, including when you must place orders for items that are being picked up that same day:

Sales tax offers for online orders are based upon the shipping destination.

Curbside pickup and store delivery orders must be placed and picked up/delivered within the specified event dates.

In store, Pickup Today orders must be placed by 4 pm for same-day pickup. Orders placed after 4 pm may be available for Pickup the next day. To take advantage of the sales tax offer in your state with Pickup Today, orders must be placed and picked up within the specified event dates.

Amazon Participates in Tax-Free Weekends, Although There May Be Exceptions

Amazon.com explains how sales tax holidays work on its help page. The site notes:

Many taxing jurisdictions require select taxable products to be temporarily exempt from tax on specific dates. For example, a sales tax holiday may be enacted on “back to school” products before the new school year.

You can find more information about sales tax holidays, including qualifying items, by visiting your state or US territory’s department of revenue (or equivalent) website.

Sales tax holidays may be applied to sales sold by Amazon.com and its affiliates, including marketplace sellers. However, tax may still be calculated on items if they do not qualify.

The item you’re purchasing must qualify for the sales tax holiday, and it must be sold by Amazon.com, Amazon.com affiliates, or marketplace sellers.

In summary, yes, in most cases, if a state is participating in a tax-free weekend, that means that you can also shop online tax-free too. However, you must purchase the item during the qualifying tax-free window. (It doesn’t matter if the item arrives after the tax-free holiday is over, as long as you paid for it during the holiday.)

Note that tax-free weekend starts at 12:01 a.m. on the first day and ends at 11:59 p.m. on the last day.

Walmart Tax Exemption Online Application For Dropshipping. How To Increase Your eCommerce Profits

If you’re shopping online because of the coronavirus pandemic — or for any other reason — then you can still participate in your state’s tax-free weekend. Many shoppers want to know if the tax-free special applies to online shopping as well. The good news is that it does.

Here’s what you need to know.

Tax-Free Weekend Typically Applies Online Too

Yes, in most cases, if a state is participating in a tax-free weekend, that means that you can also shop online tax-free too. Of course, the items you buy must meet the requirements for tax-free weekend and you must shop before the tax-free weekend ends. This means that if you want to buy something for a tax-free weekend and the holiday ends at 11:59 p.m. in your state on Sunday, then you must purchase your item before that time even if you’re shopping online. It doesn’t matter if the item arrives after the tax-free weekend, as long as you purchase it before the holiday ends and choose immediate delivery.

Note that tax-free weekend always starts at 12:01 a.m. on the first day and ends at 11:59 p.m. on the last day. You can see the full list of states participating and the start and end dates for their tax-free weekends in Heavy’s story here.

Many online retailers turn off taxes for customers shopping from tax-free states, or they turn off taxes for certain coded items. So if you want to get a tax-free item, you might want to not hide your location when you’re shopping online or use a private browser.

This doesn’t mean that all fees will disappear when you’re purchasing online. You’ll still have to pay for shipping, for example, and depending on the retailer, you may be taxed for items that don’t qualify for tax exemptions. But as long as you order and pay for the qualifying items during the tax-free weekend, you won’t be charged taxes even if the items themselves are shipped after this weekend is over.

Amazon & Walmart Both Participate in Tax-Free Weekend Online

Walmart has said that it participates in tax-free weekends and turns off taxes for relevant items and for shoppers in relevant states. But if you choose to pick up your item in the store, you must pick it up within the tax holiday and not later.

Walmart writes on its website:

Walmart.com participates in these Sales Tax Holidays unless prohibited by law.

U.S. state, county, and local tax jurisdictions determine the sales tax laws that govern sales tax holidays and participation in the sales tax holiday can vary by tax jurisdiction

The items eligible for Sales Tax Holidays are determined by the tax jurisdiction governing the specific Sales Tax Holiday

Reduced sales tax valid in select states…

To take advantage of reduced sales tax when using the Pickup Today feature, orders must be placed and picked up within the specified states tax holiday dates

Amazon’s Help page states that it participates in sales tax holidays. The webpage reads:

Many taxing jurisdictions require select taxable products to be temporarily exempt from tax on specific dates. For example, a sales tax holiday may be enacted on “back to school” products before the new school year.

You can find more information about sales tax holidays, including qualifying items, by visiting your state or US territory’s department of revenue (or equivalent) website.

Sales tax holidays may be applied to sales sold by Amazon.com and its affiliates, including marketplace sellers. However, tax may still be calculated on items if they do not qualify.

If you do shop online, don’t forget to check and see if the online store is offering any coupon codes. Many stores will offer codes that you can stack on top of the tax-free special, giving you even greater savings.
