Raw Wide Dynamic Range

Ungraded Wide Dynamic Range

Shoot Incredible High Dynamic Range (HDR) Images

The distance between the lightest and the darkest parts of an image is called dynamic range and is measured in stops. Pocket Cinema Cameras have an incredible 13 stops of dynamic range which means they preserve more detail in the lightest and darkest areas of an image than simple video cameras can. This allows you to set exposure for an indoor scene such as a cafe and still retain the details of bright outdoor light coming through a window. You also get more colors than the standard DCI-P3 colorspace used for feature films. Plus DaVinci Resolve Studio is included with the camera, so you get total creative freedom with full exposure adjustment and recovery controls when color grading!

Dual Gain ISO for Exceptional Low Light Performance

In digital film ISO is a measurement of the image sensor’s sensitivity to light. This means the higher the ISO number the more sensitivity to light so it’s possible to shoot using natural light even at night! The Pocket Cinema Cameras feature dual gain ISO up to 25,600, which means they're optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments. The gain is set automatically as you adjust the ISO setting, so it's easy to capture great images when you don’t have time to set up lights.

Blackmagic Raw

The quality of RAW and the speed of video!

Blackmagic RAW is a revolutionary new format designed to capture and preserve the quality of the sensor data from your camera. Video formats such as H.264 are highly compressed, plus add noise and weird artifacts, causing original sensor detail to be lost forever. Blackmagic RAW eliminates this problem and gives you stunning images with incredible detail and color throughout the production pipeline from camera to edit, color and mastering. It also saves camera settings as metadata so you can set ISO, white balance and exposure in camera or override them later while editing, all without any loss of quality! Blackmagic RAW files are also small and fast to use making them easy to work with. Only Blackmagic RAW gives you the highest quality, smallest files and fastest performance!

Color Temperature

Setting the color temperature tells the camera how to interpret white and other colors in an image. Instead of saving images with color values baked in, Blackmagic RAW makes it possible for you to change the temperature in post production with DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Contrast

Adjusting contrast, or the tonal range of an image, can make different parts of the image stand out. While you should always try to get the best shot on set, Blackmagic RAW gives you the flexibility to adjust contrast without any loss of quality while you’re editing and color correcting.

ISO

Changing the ISO adjusts the camera’s sensitivity to light. Properly exposed shots require the right combination of ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Depending on the lights and exposure settings, you may need to adjust ISO in post.

Tint

Adjusting tint is another way you can affect the overall color balance of an image. Unlike saturation or midpoint which can make reds redder or yellows more yellow, adjusting tint actually lets you push the colors in different directions.

Saturation

Saturation is the strength or purity of a color. More saturated colors are pure and less saturated colors have a percentage of gray in proportionto their hue. Adjusting saturation in Blackmagic RAW images can help make the colors visually pop or become muted.

Exposure

In order for your images to look good, you need to make sure that it’s not too bright (overexposed) or too dark (underexposed). With Blackmagic RAW, the exposure settings can be changed in post so you can save shots that were not properly exposed!

Best of all, DaVinci Resolve will automatically find and sync the shots from all cameras so you don't need to waste time sorting through thousands of shots!

Shoot Still Frames up to 21.2 Megapixels!

In addition to shooting video, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera can also capture high resolution stills. Simply press the dedicated stills button to record 21.2 megapixel images on the 6K models or 8 megapixel images on the 4K model. Still images are saved as fully uncompressed DNG frames, so you get the maximum image quality, which is perfect for making professional prints. Capturing still images is great for keeping track of continuity between shots or for sharing images to get approval from clients that are not on set.

Innovative Carbon Fiber Reinforced Design

Designed using a space age carbon fiber polycarbonate composite, the body of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is extremely strong and light. The carbon composite material consists of a high strength polymer that’s reinforced with carbon fibers. This makes the camera body incredibly light giving it the strength and rigidity to protect it from bangs, drops and accidental breakage. That means you’ll be able to take it virtually anywhere and have the confidence to know that you’ll be able to get your shots, even under the most harsh shooting conditions!

Designed for Hours of Hand Held Use

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is designed to feel familiar and comfortable with logically placed external controls that give you quick access to essential functions. The multi function hand grip features buttons and dials in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes that make it easier for you to find the buttons you need without taking your eyes off the action. You get controls for recording, still photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, power and more. Plus, the handgrip design features a unique 45º pattern that provides the perfect amount of resistance so the camera won’t slip out of your hands. If you’ve ever shot with a DSLR, Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera will feel very familiar, but the images will look far better!

All Control, Monitoring and Recording Built In

With other cameras, you often have to add accessories for things such as on-set monitoring, professional sound or high quality RAW recording. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera models are designed to include everything you need built right in. It’s like getting a camera with a built in Video Assist! You get a 5 inch touchscreen that can be used as an on-set monitor with intuitive touch to focus tools, peaking indicators, false color, level meters, a histogram and more. You also get dual built-in media recorders for the highest quality Blackmagic RAW and ProRes recording, 3D LUT support, 4 shock resistant microphones, and professional connections for even more expansion options. All of these built in features make it the ultimate all-in-one camera for filmmakers!

Eliminate Rigging with Adjustable HDR Monitor

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro features a bright 5" touchscreen HDR monitor that can be tilted up to 180 degrees flat and down to 47 degrees. This means that you can get a perfect shot from almost any angle without needing any additional rigging! Plus, the 1500 nit high brightness screen makes monitoring easy, even in direct sunlight. You can even preserve battery life by selecting to dim the screen for power saving when the camera is not in use! Convenient finger grip tabs are integrated into the design of the fold out monitor to allow for easy adjustment for the perfect screen position. It’s now even easier to frame shots and get perfect focus!

Bright 5 inch Touchscreen Monitor!

You’ll never have to carry around a separate monitor for focussing a high resolution shot when you’re shooting with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. That’s because it features a built in super bright 5 inch touchscreen monitor that’s perfect for framing shots and checking focus. The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro model features a 1500nit screen, so you can clearly see your shot even in bright sunlight. You can even double tap on the LCD to zoom in, turn on focus peaking, focus assist and more! Plus you can use the touchscreen to access the Blackmagic OS, which lets you control all of the camera’s advanced functions with simple tap and swipe gestures. You can even add metadata using the built in digital slate!

Advanced Thermal Management

Keeping the image sensor and internal components cool is incredibly important because it directly affects image quality. Cooler sensors can run at higher frame rates and capture cleaner images with less noise than a hot sensor. That’s why Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera is designed with a patented two-way thermal management system that features liquid cooling. A series of heatsink vent grills draws the heat away from the FPGA processor and image sensor. As the heat is drawn away from critical components, the liquid flows to cooling fins that are designed and specifically angled to minimize intrusion of dust or other contaminants.

Professional Quality Audio with 4 Internal Microphones

Designed from the ground up with professional audio in mind Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera models feature 4 built in, shock resistant microphones with extremely low noise for capturing high fidelity audio with incredible clarity. The cameras also feature a mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power for connecting professional boom and lapel microphones. You can also use the 3.5mm input to connect standard video camera microphones. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera gives you professional quality audio recording and built in microphones, along with the ability to use your own external microphones so you’ll never have to carry an external sound recorder with you again!

Record Direct to External USB‑C Flash Media Disks

USB‑C is now standard on everything from computers to cell phones. It’s very fast, provides both power and data, and has an extremely small connector. Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera includes a USB‑C Expansion Port so you can connect peripherals such as flash or SSD drives for longer recording times. Once recording is complete, you can simply unplug the disk and connect it to your editing workstation. The USB‑C connection also handles power, so you can use a standard computer power supply or power pack to charge the internal battery!

In addition, each connection has added features that make them even more useful. The full size HDMI connector supports 10‑bit HDR output with or without overlays for the highest possible quality monitoring. The mini XLR connections feature 48 volts of phantom power so you don’t need an external microphone pre‑amp. Blackmagic Design Announces the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro

The new BMPCC6K (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K) Pro it’s a hybridization between the Pocket Cinema 6K to the URSA Mini Pro, but with an ND filter and options for the dedicated electronic viewfinder and extra power accessories. Nevertheless, it’s not “pocket” sized anymore. Let’s have a glimpse.

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K Pro is a Super 35 camera that includes additional pro features such as built-in 2, 4, and 6 stop ND filters, adjustable tilt HDR LCD with a bright 1500 nits that are ideal for use in bright sunlight. It also includes two mini XLR audio inputs and a larger NP-F570 style battery. Let’s start with the upgrade that every Pocket shooters were yearning for, which is (of course) the ND filters.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro features high-quality, motorized IR ND filters that let you quickly reduce the amount of light entering the camera. Designed to match the colorimetry and color science of the camera, the 2, 4, and 6 stop filters provide an additional latitude. The IR filters have been designed to filter both optical and IR wavelengths evenly, eliminating IR contamination of the images. Activation buttons are located on the rear of the camera body, placed within tactical reach of your thumb from the multi-function hand grip. User-selectable filter settings can even be displayed as either an ND number, stop reduction, or fraction on the LCD.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K: The built-In ND filters

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro LCD monitor is a more advanced HDR display that can be tilted up and down so it’s easy to monitor your shot. Plus the 6K Pro model’s HDR display features 1500 nits of brightness which can be viewed in direct sunlight.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro supports an optional viewfinder. You get an integrated high-quality 1280 x 960 color OLED display with a built-in proximity sensor, 4 element glass diopter for incredible accuracy with a wide -4 to +4 focus adjustment. A built-in digital focus chart ensures you get a perfect viewfinder focus setup. You can also view critical status information such as frame guides. The Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF connects quickly to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro via a single connector. The viewfinder has a 70-degree swivel range and comes with 4 different types of eyecups for both left and right eyes.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K use removable LP-E6 type batteries while the 6K Pro model uses larger NP-F570 batteries. A Locking DC power connector is used, plus the included AC plug pack can power the camera and charge the battery simultaneously. You also get a set of international socket adapters for worldwide use. The USB-C expansion port can trickle charge the battery, so you can use portable battery packs, mobile phone chargers, or laptops.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, with the Camera Battery Pro Grip

The Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro costs $2,495, and the Camera Pro EVF costs $495. The camera can be preordered via the B&H website

The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro is not a “Pocket” anymore. It’s much more cumbersome than the regional Pocket. However, it includes many crucial features for filmmakers, like the essential ND filters (the main cause of the larger size of the camera), a more sophisticated and usable LCD screen, and an optional viewfinder. Should you upgrade? Well, it’s up to you. It’s a $500 delta regarding price (the “regular” 6K costs $2,000), so basically you pay the $500 on the ND filters which can save a lot of hustle in production. However, in case you don’t own a Pocket yet, maybe it worths spending $500 more on the Pro model. But be advised, it’s not so compact camera.
